These recent remarks by Noam Chomsky are both insightful and easy to follow.

He focuses on how the government serves the rich elite. We see this clearly in the gap between what the public wants (jobs, safety net) and the public policies we get (deficit reduction).

Relatedly, he also discusses how the West and the USSR--for different reasons--endlessly proclaimed the same lie: that Soviet totalitarianism was "socialism." With the same false propaganda being cranked out by both sides, socialism never had a chance.

Chomsky offers shrewd and interesting reflections on America today.

Howard Zinn on War

In brief

Some highly relevant reflections on our wars by the late Progressive historian (and World War Two veteran) Howard Zinn. Among his main points:

If war resulted from human nature, national leaders would not need propaganda, the draft, and prisons to cajole and compel citizens to participate. It's the leaders--not the citizens--who want war. Therefore, the first step to war is a propaganda campaign at home. War solves no problems, transforms virtuous people into beasts, and kills primarily innocent civilians. Finally: It's an uphill battle (forgive the metaphor), but people may be able to abolish war if they try.

As a bombardier in the Army Air Corps, Zinn helped kill his share of innocent civilians--as he later realized and acknowledged. A particularly striking incident, in which Zinn participated, was the destruction of the French resort town of Royan--a town of no military significance--in the final days of the war (April 1945).

Zinn later learned that the massive raid on Royan had killed a few German soldiers--who were "hiding and waiting out the closing days of the war"--and more than 1,500 French civilians. The carnage gave a few generals another "success" to add to their resumes. And it gave the Air Corps its first chance to test a new weapon it had developed: napalm.

1,500 civilians. Not even "enemy" civilians but "allied" civilians--though Zinn rejects that distinction as specious. Many of them burned to death. By the R.A.F. and the U.S. Army Air Corps. For what purpose?

At what point do we say, "This is insane"?

The Goals and Results
of American Imperialism

In brief

Progressive political scientist Michael Parenti is in fine form in this recent speech, which brings together his key insights about the practice and purpose of the U.S. Empire and imperialism. Some of Parenti's main points will be familiar to long-time fans. Here they are made with fine wit and good specific examples from current events.

He argues that the purpose of our imperialism is not national glory but rather the further enriching of Wall Street and other transnational corporations. U.S. foreign policy seems "stupid," "irrational," or "self-defeating" only to those who misunderstand its real goals.

Highlights of Part One (NWN #201) include a look at how empires bleed dry the republics from which they grew. For instance, the city of Oakland, California, is closing most of its public libraries for lack of funds--while spending millions to equip its police force with military gear.

Highlights of Part Two (NWN #202) include a survey of the many governments the U.S. government has overthrown in recent decades. In each case, Parenti shows, the other country had attempted to chart an independent economic course. The list includes Iraq, Panama, Haiti, Chile, Yugoslavia, and--very recently--Honduras and now Libya. And who could forget our glorious military victory over Grenada (1983)?

Parenti ends his talk with a surprisingly explicit call for democratic socialism.

In brief

Never mind Fox News and the like. Even the most prestigious "mainstream" media--such as the New York Times--bathe the reader in a sea of propaganda. The propaganda furthers the interests of the elite, promotes perpetual war, and denies voice to the opposition. Journalist/filmmaker John Pilger and commentator Margaret Kimberley explain how it works.

Then a 1972 propaganda film attempts to show student antiwar protesters the error of their ways. Unintentionally hilarious!

A handful of U.S. veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars--now opposed to such wars--meet, talk, and organize. Then, at the Winter Soldier 2 hearings in 2008, they testify publicly to what they saw and did, including the atrocities and war crimes they witnessed. They reveal, touchingly, the psychological burdens veterans now carry.

This week, New World Notes plays selections from the gripping and ultimately hopeful video documentary--scheduled for broadcast in January on PBS stations that choose to air it.

Noted peace activist Kathy Kelly discusses the reality of the U.S.'s recent wars. Kelly and some colleagues had "embedded" themselves--not among soldiers but among the common people living in war zones. She gives first-hand accounts of what she saw and heard in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Gaza. She details the massive suffering of innocent people caused by the U.S.'s military adventures.

Here is a side of war that you won't find revealed in the mainstream media.

Kelly also speaks eloquently of the high cost of these unnecessary wars to the American people.

She delivered this talk in Binghamton, New York, in November 2009.

Retired Colonel--now Professor--Bacevich (pronounced BAY-se-vitch) critiques the US's policy of constant military intervention everywhere. This broadcast includes a recent article by Bacevich ("Is America Coming to Its Senses?")--which is cautiously optimistic--and selections from a recorded interview.

Bacevich is the author of five books on US foreign and national-security policy. The most recent is Washington Rules: America's Path to Permanent War (2010).

John Perkins in Hartford

In brief

"Economic hit-man" John Perkins tells fascinating behind-the-scenes stories of exactly how the US-based corporate empire imposes its will (& greed) on developing countries.

Recorded live in 2005 and never before broadcast.

In Part One (NWN #191), Perkins tells how the US overthrew Iran's democratic government in 1953 ... how he himself was recruited by the NSA & trained to serve the Empire (a.k.a., "the corporatocracy") ... and of his early failures to corrupt the governments of Panama and Ecuador (ca. 1980). Time to send in the "jackals"!

In Part Two (NWN #192), Perkins explains the the read reason the U.S. invaded Panama and overthrew Noriega in 1989. And he tells of one of his--and the Empire's--great successes: Saudi Arabia. The West made a fortune from the deal but--as Perkins sees it--the consequences have been horrific.

Despite Perkins' best efforts, the Empire failed to corrupt Omar Torrijos, of Panama (above), and Jaime Roldos, of Ecuador (below). Each died in a mysterious aircraft explosion in 1981. Perkins dedicated Confessions of an Economic Hit-Man to the memory of Torrijos.

Parents protest marketing products to children on school buses.

In brief

Want to destroy quality public education? First underfund it. Then open schools up to milking by corporate marketing departments. Then--by force of law--privatize public schools--in the process busting teachers' unions and replacing experienced, well-trained teachers with inexperienced, poorly trained, and ill-paid ones.

The result? Increased corporate profits and citizens/workers incapable of critically questioning (let alone fighting back against!) The System. It's a win-win situation!--at least for the corporate greedheads.

From the documentary Corporations in the Classroom we'll hear about two notorious schemes to market products to captive audiences of U.S. schoolchildren: Bus Radio and Channel One TV.

Journalist/commentator Chris Hedges discusses the Oligarchy's project of privatizing schools, destroying Liberal Arts education, and training young people only to serve as cogs in various parts of the economic engine. This project is a century old--but it has made great gains under Bush II and Obama.

Fr. Guido Sarducci offers some comic relief. He presents his plan to offer a quality college education in only five minutes, at a cost of $20.

Channel One brags to potential advertisers about

its captive audience of young people in school.

What's a populist? Broadly speaking, it's a person who believes that government should be controlled by the people--not by the oligarchs and big corporations. And that government should serve the needs of the people (not ... etc.). The three populists we'll hear from this week are

Tommy Douglas: Longtime Canadian politician & reformer, co-founder of Canada's New Democratic Party (social-democratic), Premier of Saskatchewan Province 1944-1960. Said to be the person responsible for the first Medicare program in North America. Died in 1986. We'll hear his oft-told comic beast-fable about unresponsive politicians, Mouseland
Molly Ivins: Texas-based journalist and nationally-known commentator, here speaking in Berkeley, CA, around 2005. She died in 2007
Jim Hightower: Former Texas state government official (Agriculture Commissioner)--back when liberal Democrats could get elected to office in Texas. Now a nationally-known political commentator, self-identified populist, and general troublemaker. Still alive & kickin'

Each is witty and amusing (sometimes downright funny). Each offers a worthwhile critique of the present System--and a call to action.

Bruce Gagnon:
Endless War for Endless Profit

The War Machine's grand vision: control the solar system through

space-based high-tech warfare--defending the profits of

U.S.-based transnational corporations.

In brief

Antiwar and antinuke activist Bruce K. Gagnon argues brilliantly that the main purpose of US wars is to enrich the military-industrial complex and the rest of the oligarchy.

And the techniques remain the same, generation after generation. The same lies, the same U.S. atrocities against civilans, the same false demonization of "enemy" leaders--from Muammar Gaddafi to Saddam Hussein, ... back at least as far as Crazy Horse in the 1870s.

Gagnon's history of the U.S. campaign against Crazy Horse is an eye-opener. After the U.S. government won the Indian Wars, and all the once-rebellious tribes including their leaders were sitting on reservtions--unarmed and horseless--profits of the war industries plunged. So the warmongers invented and widely publicized false stories of Indians still on the rampage. They especially demonized Crazy Horse, now denouncd for ongoing vicious plunder, rape, and murder of white settlers.

It was all lies, but military procurements rose in response, and war industry profits went back up.

Did somebody mention Gaddafi and his alleged Viagra-fueled rape squads?

There's more, including the insanity of sending plutonium into space, of mining on other planets, and of planning to control--militarily--the solar system. Then there's the U.S. military's explicit acknowledgement (in case there was any doubt in your mind) that their purpose is to advance the interests of the plutocrats that control the transnational corporate capitalist stystem. (Defend the United States nation against attack? How quaint!)

In the early 1950s the federal government began strongly encouraging civilian uses of nuclear technology--good news for reactor makers General Electric and Westinghouse! "Atoms for Peace," the massive sales campaign was called.

President Eisenhower gave an important speech on the subject at the United Nations. The Post Office issued an "Atoms for Peace" commemorative first-class stamp (3 cents!) in 1955. In March 1956, Mechanix Illustrated magazine featured a profusely illustrated article, "Why Don't We Build an Atoms-for-Peace Dirigible." Not even a question mark.

A nuclear-powered blimp. What could be more sensible?

Yes, the propaganda was flowing fast and furiously. As I recall, "Our friend, the atom" was a slogan in wide use. As for nuclear-generated electricity, the watchword was, "Too cheap to meter!"

This week, in another nice audiocollage, Virtual Renderings explores the wild promises made made for civilian nukes--and the very scary reality behind the propaganda--from 1950 through the meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979. Sound sources include old propaganda films, news reports, interviews from documentary films, and some music--as usual, all very nicely woven together.

Three segments from Scott Noble's fine new documentary video about the betrayal of the American people by their political system.

1. A heartbreaking collection of Obama campaign promises--every one of which he broke. Get out of Iraq immediately; stop torture; close Guantanamo; bail out the people, not just the investment banks; renegotiate NAFTA; develop clean energy sources . . . and more. Everything Americans yearned for he promised. And we're still yearning.

2. Discussion by various figures of how US politics is controlled by--and serves only--Big Money.

3. A stunning speech at a war protest demonstration (D.C., December 16, 2010) by commentator Chris Hedges--on the meaning of the word "hope." Given The System's betrayal of democracy, hope requires the people to engage in public acts of nonviolent resistance to "the corporate state," he explains. (Hedges and more than 100 veterans then chained themselves to the White House fence and were arrested.)

The musical score in the background makes Hedges' speech even more stunning and inspiring. Hedges' remarks are preceded by a few on similar themes by John Pilger (2009).

Technology and Society

The Antichrist, in the shape of Steve Jobs, holds a recent
"smart phone" variation, the iPad.

The new "smart phones" such as Apple's iPhone have been revealed to be excellent devices for spying on the phones' owners. So this might be a good time to hear Dr. Neil Postman's celebrated and witty lecture, "Technology and Society" (1998).

Postman proposes six questions that society--and individuals--ought to consider before deciding to adopt any particular new technology.

Part 1 (NWN #174) includes some of Postman's introduction and his discussion of the first four questions.

Part 2 (NWN #175) includes

1. the final two questions and Postman's remarks on the relationship of TV and religion;

2. a news article on yet another spooky aspect of smart phones;
3. remarks by technology-law expert Jonathan Zittrain on the government's use of other "smart" wireless technology to spy on citizens (plus more bad news about the iPhone).

For many years a professor at New York University, Neil Postman wrote extensively on educational theory and theory of technology, as well as other works of cultural criticism. He died in 2003.

Postman spoke at Calvin College in January 1998. This lecture is available as 7 videos on YouTube. Jonathan Zittrain spoke at the University of Hartford on October 20, 2010 (recorded by me).

George Carlin Tribute

George Carlin died three years ago, on June 22, 2008. Lacking much formal education, he proved to be an impressive thinker and political analyst. Originally a hit as a middle-of-the-road, Hollywood comic, his political thinking moved leftwards over the years. By the 1990s, he was America's preeminent Progressive comic and satirist--and more popular than ever. This tribute includes four of Carlin's finer routines from the 1990s, with introductions by me.

We present Heather Rogers' 18-minute video documentary from 2005, Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage plus introduction and other commentary by me.

It's about the growing mountains of waste generated by a consumer economy based on disposable products. It's about the inability of recycling programs to actually recycle most of the stuff they receive. It's about the massive "Keep America Beautiful" anti-littering campaign--an industry ploy designed to head off anti-disposables legislation.

We end with a couple minutes on plastic waste from Annie Leonard's The Story of Bottled Water

This week's show is more loosely structured than most. Its three segments do have this in common: literally or metaphorically, each segment concerns one or more of three gods: Eros, Mars, and Jehovah/Allah.

We'll hear three comedy routines poking fun at the lapses of Christian congregants and clergy.I'll read an expose' of rampant, socially sanctioned homosexual pedophilia in Afghanistan--justified, practitioners claim, by Islamic Law. And we'll hear some unintentionally hilarious public-service announcements from the Defense Department (ca. 1960) on how to survive a nuclear war.

The comedy routines are by (in order) Neal DeGrasse Tyson, Jimmy Tingle, and Rowan Atkinson.

The intensifying attack on public schools has 2 prongs. One is the campaign to turn the schools over to for-profit corporations. Glen Ford and Mumia Abu-Jamal analyze the scam brilliantly.

The second prong is consumer advertising and marketing to a captive audience of students within the schools. Many schools are so under-funded that they feel they have to let the marketers in. This segment rebroadcasts portions of a nice Canadian documentary, Corporations in the Classroom.

A celebration of writer Joe Bageant, who died March 26. The self-described "redneck socialist" wrote brilliantly, profanely, and wittily on the corporate plundering of America--and on the connivance of our politicians in that plunder.

Rare among writers, he wrote sympathetically of the culture of a despised minority group. This was poor whites--"rednecks," he called them--and he was born and raised one himself. He's best known for his best-selling book, Deer Hunting With Jesus (2008).

This installment features readings from two of Bageant's essays, a terrific obituary in a style much like Joe's, and selections from documentaries and recorded interviews.

Since my birth in 1950, U.S. foreign policy seems to have consisted of war, war, empire building, and more war. Is anybody else sick of this? ... or at least feeling broke from paying for it all?

Two fine thinkers (and I too) explore the problem.

(1) Michael Parenti (1990s) discusses the the functions & purposes of the American empire and why "we" invade so many countries and overthrow their governments--many of them democracies. With an update by Parenti, from 2009, on the real reasons for our bombing of the former Yugoslavia (recorded live in West Hartford by me).

(2) Bruce Gagnon--famed crusader against the militarization of space & related worthy issues--discusses the U.S.'s policy of Endless War and the related destruction of our industrial base. And he shows who profits from these events. HINT: it's not our children, who face a future of no jobs outside the armed forces. (Also recorded live in West Hartford by me, in 2010.)

The country is in a mess, economically, politically, in terms of civil liberties ... you name it! Well, it's not that nobody warned us where we were heading! Three prophets of years past combine wit, humor, and insight:

(1) Comedian George Carlin (2 routines from the 1990s) discusses the exploitation by the rich of everyone else, our non-functioning democracy, the falseness of The American Dream, class warfare, "divide and conquer," and Wall Street's determination to get your Social Security money for themselves.

(2) Political scientist Michael Parenti (early 1990s) corroborates Carlin on Social Security.

(3) Parenti goes on to discuss the U.S. government's & media's (then-recent or ongoing) propaganda campaigns seeking to drum up public support for attacking Libya, Panama, and Iraq--and for overthrowing the governments of Gaddafi, Noriega, & Saddam Hussein (respectively).

(4) Spoken-word artist Jello Biafra (2008, before the election) warns that Obama is just another "business as usual" politician dedicated only to reducing civil liberties, building the empire, and advancing the financial interests of the powerful corporations. (Just look at his voting record in the Senate!)

Rovics is good indeed at writing "bottom-up" history--which stresses how the world was experienced by the common people. He works in the same genre as did the late Howard Zinn. On top of that, Rovics is a very talented singer/songwriter and musician. So listen to him for the excellent music, if not for the history lessons. (See below for the address of his free archive.)
